I got an 8GB Touch free with a MacBook and discovered it was completely useless for podcasts -with the new OS, it's now possible to actually download podcasts directly to the touch via wi-fi, but it's still a lousy way to hear and watch news shows compared with a device that allows full web functionality, which both the Touch and the iPhone do NOT do. News shows online are overwhelmingly produced in Flash or Realplayer formats, neither of which Mac allows on its handhelds. This causes huge and unnecessary problem and inconveniences for news junkies. So be warned! Go for a handheld that allows full web functionality if you want easily accessable webcasts.

This should be a warning as well for anyone who thinks they'll get full web functionality on a Touch or iPhone -you get nothing close without Flash or Realplayer. Mac is following the Microsoft model of forcing you to use its software, in this case iTunes, rather than allowing full web access.

Here's how you access a news show on the computer: go to the webpage, read the info, if you want to hear or see it, click.

Here's how you access a news show on the Touch: forget the show's webpage, it's useless to you. First you have to do a search for it by keyboarding in the show's name in iTunes, then you have to download (not stream) a podcast. Then to hear any future podcasts, you have to go to stored "Music" files and search thru your downloads, find the show you want, then click on "Get More Episodes". Then the Touch goes to Safari, opens the podcast list in iTunes and hopefully lists the current show. Unfortunately, the latest news show, though it's on the website, is often not available in iTunes. It's not uncommon to have to wait 24 hours to get a news show from iTunes that's already available on the show's webpage. And what you get in Itunes is a bare three word preliminary description of the show, as taken from the show's website. It's your guess whether it's something you might be interested in. The show's actual website will give a full length description of the show and the guests, but Apple in its cluelessness won't let you listen to anything directly from a website, you gotta go thru iTunes or not at all.

If you chose to live stream a news video from iTunes, if iTunes drops it, as it often does, you have to type in the name of the show via "Search" and start over, or try to find where you were dropped at. Its' all a huge pain you wouldn't have on a machine that allows full web access.

I received the new iPod touch as promised. It is working great. I read the reviews from other people and I am very careful not to get any moisture on the iPod. The battery life seems better than my older iPod and so far lasts for about 3-4 hours approximately which is good.

I use my older iPod when I excercise. My daughter downloaded one of the games from the iTunes stores and she was playing for hours. The WiFi feture works great. It is not superfast, but I can look up web sites without turning on the computer which is cool. I also use the weather feature and the stocks feature. I was playing with the maps feature and it is really interesting. My favorite feature is that I can listen to podcasts without syncing my computer. It works great for audio podcasts, and not video podcasts which is fine with me. Overall, it is a very enjoyable new gadget. I procrastinated for a long time before making the jump to Apple. Certainly no regrets. My son manages his many business ventures solely on Apple products and at his strong recommendation, I bought.

My purchase was primarily for web access while moving through my day, and this is fully adequate. The other preloaded applications are completely satisfactory. The apps store is so over the top. Just go there and you will see what I mean.

PROS: Very easy to use and very user friendly. Battery life has been no problem at all.
CONS: None yet. Yes, it fingerprints easily. Not an issue for me as long as Windex is available.

I always wanted a PDA to organize my life since the early heydays of the
Palm pilot but couldnt spring for it due to the high prices. Then comes
along the iPod touch which in other words is a computer that fits in
your pocket. I have other Apple MP3 products which includes the nano and
the iPod classic however the iPod touch is the most impressive. The
screen is bright and the colors displayed are vivid. The slim size of
the iPod touch is just right for slipping it in your pocket. I would
recommend that you get a case, and not just any case I recommend getting
one of those aluminum cases with a screen protector because that gives
you maximum protection. I have dropped my iPod touch a couple of times
and I dont think any impact goes through the unit when compared to one
of those common silicon cases.

In referring to the iPod touch as a computer it all comes down to the
Apps and the Wifi Internet access. Where I live I do not get any
Wifi Internet access,however when I am out and about I do get blazing fast access which enables me to read emails and view YouTube videos. This feature alone sold me on plunking the $200 + dollars for the iPod touch.

In regards to the Apps available there are numerous ones available and being developed which includes games, utilities, business applications etc. I foresee the iPod touch used as an enterprise workhorse in the near future because the software running the iPod touch is a full fledged Operating System like Windows and Apple OS X. On the negative side of this otherwise stellar product is the pitiful battery life. It drains down really fast when playing graphic intensive games, however i think Apple has addressed this issue with the new iPod touch 2.2.2 softwarepatch release which I installed last night 2/5/2009. After the installation of this patch I see a noticeable improvement in the battery life. It could be my imagination but I recommend installing this patch,its very large, over 700 MB but I think it must be important or Apple would not have released it.

So there it is my review of the iPod touch, a truly GREAT product !!. I was disillusioned with Apple over my 4th generation iPod which gave a lot of problems, however with introduction of the iPhone and the iPod touch
Apple won me back,and solidifies their status as the most innovative
company in America and quite easily in the world.

A year ago, if anyone would have told me that I would own an iPod, I would've said "no way". I thought they were too expensive, and the lack of a radio (something that even $40 mp3 players come with) really bothered me. But last June I bought a Macbook Pro, and I love it. A friend of mine got an iPhone about the same time, and that got me thinking about the Touch. I got it last Xmas, and it's become my day planner, PDA, alarm clock, newsreader, and my latest, e-book reader. Sometimes I even forget that it plays music. I adore it. So why 4 stars and not 5? Because Apple still can't put a darn radio tuner in, mobile Safari still doesn't have Flash (come on Apple, Flash is the standard in only 99% of websites, at least I think that's what the problem is with many sites) and I wish there were support for other video formats so I can view videos that I shoot with my digital camera. The external speaker is mono quality, but if I happen to forget my headphones I can still listen to music, and for playing games it's good to not have to have your headphones on. As for the wi-fi, it works flawlessly with my Airport router, always a strong and fast connection. The apps store offerings are almost limitless. I will definitely have to say this is by far the best MP3. It is convenient and easy to use. It has a great variety in Itunes. The battery lasts a long time. I use it mainly for music, but i will also upload movies that i haven't seen and watch them basically anywhere that I might have to wait at. I play my Ipod in my car and listen to many podcasts. I've had my new IPod Touch for about a month now and love it more each day. I have the 16 GB and plan to exchange it for the 32 GB shortly, however as my memory is getting close to maxing out already. I have all my music stored on it like I did my last IPod Classic, but this has the built-in speaker, internet access (that I can use anywhere in the house or at work), weather updates, maps & directions, Face book, YouTube, calendar, contacts, a notepad that I use constantly for my to-do lists, shopping lists, etc., as well as many other applications. The latest app that I downloaded for free was "Lose It", a great weight loss too that calculates how many calories you can eat to lose a specified amount of weight. Then, it lets record the foods you eat during the day and the exercises you do add up all the individual and total calories consumed, less the allowance for exercise and calories burned, to net you total used and remaining calories available. Love it! I've lost over 6 lbs in 3 weeks. My goal was 2 lbs/wk and it's working. I also downloaded the free Podcast "9 weeks from couch potato to 5k" and started walking/running. Great Podcast.
I am concerned about a previous review where the Itouch went from the cold outside to the warm inside and caused condensation that was not covered under warranty. In my mind, this is a defect. It should be able to withstand at least that amount of temperature change and this reflects very poorly on apple engineers (unless they are just greedy and want to keep selling more). My son had an iPod shuffle for Christmas one year and he dropped it in the soft fresh snow and immediately picked it up, only to find that it was never to work again. I have a protective case and will be upgrading to a new leather one with the hopes of a moderately durable product. This is the 5th iPod purchase for me and there are only two working. While the innovation is great and practical use is great (5-star), the design and durability is poor (1-star) so I ultimately give this a 3. I hope that the durability proves to be better.

This is the first actual IPOD I have ever owned, so I did very extensive research on this before purchasing. I must say it is worth the money! The user interface is incredible, and its ability to carry so many types of media and reproduce video and pics with such brilliance stunned me.

The screen does gets fingerprints, but does appear to be scratch resistant. I recommend some sort of case to protect your investment.

Never before have I had anything where I could carry movies with me, so this is great for films with a digital copy available!

Sound quality of the earphones stinks, so upgrade those and you'll be glad you did.

My first Ipod Touch came without a working touch screen, so sent it back and received a new one. All was well for the first two weeks until I tried to ugragde the OS to the new 2.2 version. Halfway though, the Ipod crashed and never powered up again despite resetting. I called Apple support and thought it took 30 minutes, I finally convinced them that this Ipod was dead. I later searched on the web and found many postings of the same nature (crash on upgrade to 2.2.).

Apple told me to take it to the nearest repair facility for repair/replacment. I've had an Ipod Classic for three years and never had a single crash or upgrade issue. The Ipod Touch... a total failure on something as simple as an upgrade? The technical support said perhaps my fire wall had something to do with preventing an upload of the Bonjour software, which somehow is necessary for Ipods to update...that was never made clear. So, it's off to Apple for the second time in as many weeks with a dodgy Ipod Touch.

This is a great little item when it works. Checking E-mail, video, games, long battery life, great touch screen functionality...all wonderfully bundled into a neat gadget. But what good is it when it crashes and burns when you take Apple's suggestion to update the software? This is not an isolated incident and Apple does not have much to say about it. Apple said the turn-a-round on replacing the item is about three to four days but I'm off on an international trip tomorrow and very disappointed that my handy-dandy Ipod Touch will not make the trip. The device itself is wonderful. It works great for playing music and videos. I was hoping that it would replace my palm pilot, but it does not quite cut it. The notes feature does not snyc with MS outlook. It has a notes feature, but it will not communicate with Outlook. There is a third party notes feature that will allow me to upload my notes to the internet, but I have to do that at a WiFi hot spot, I can't do that over my DSL connection.

A drawback of the operating system it that music stored on the device has to also be stored on the hard drive of my desktop. That can hog up a lot of hard drive space. I had to restore my hard drive, and when I did, the Itunes software decicded to erase everything from my ipod. I was very disappointed.

The device gets 5 stars for the hardware and as a portable DVD replacement, but the quality of the operating system is just not up to the standard that I expect from Apple. If you want to replace your PDA this device is not the best choice, get a Blackberry. I really think apple has missed the mark advertising the iPod touch mainly as a game machine . The apps are extraordinarily useful ... I'm very glad I decided ( at the last minute ) to get the 32 gb model. I'm not using the iPod portion that much --some music and podcasts, but the add on apps have been very VERY useful. The screen is gorgeous , the keypad easy to use. If I had to quibble I'd say my biggest gripe is that flash and shockwave don't work yet. I know why apple has done that, but it's inconvenient. Youtube videos are fine. Battery life okay if you arent on the internet the whole time -- i am, so it gets about five or six hours.Wifi reception has been excellent. Built in speaker is tinny and not loud enough, but i rarely use it so i didnt take off for that.There's an app to share files with your computer wirelessly, which is handy for transferring stuff via webdav connection to read later when you have no connection. Another app lets you capture articles from news and web sources to revisit later. There's even an app to make voip calls from the touch.(you have to add earphones with a mic -- picked up a pair on amazon for $7 and now make occasional calls via Internet. there have been a few times that I REALLY missed not being able to connect when away from wifi, but I do not miss the 2 yr contract to at&t. if you have wireless handy and don't need a full service phone contract this is the answer. I have owned ipods since they were first released and have upgraded to newer versions about 5 times. Although i have to admit that the UI (User interface) on the itouch/iphone is the most amazing in every portable mp3 device or phone ever built, apple has made some changes to the hardware on the itouch that have completely disappointed me to a point where I sold my 32Gb itouch and bought a 120Gb ipod classic instead. Apple decided to change the connector inside the device by removing the pin that allows firewire functionality, this means that with many third party peripherals and accessories you won't be able to charge your itouch as it plays. Another example, my car came with a built-in ipod interface which works great with any other ipod models except for the itouch, with the ipod video i owned before, it used to play AND charge through the interface, it worked perfectly, I never had to take the ipod out of my car for over a year, it was always charged!!! Then, with the itouch, not only it didn't charge, but it also froze my car stereo and would make the itouch soft reset itself. It was a true pain in the a@@. I spoke with several 2nd and 3rd tier tech guys from ipod support and they were the ones that explained what had been removed in the itouch, they also explained that it was NOT a software issue, it is caused by the hardware change that apple decided to make. Bad mistake!! I am glad the video/classic ipod i bought again works fine. Too bad because i did like the user interface on the itouch. However, in a quiet room, the speaker is still useful for previewing a song you might want to buy, or for playing games. However, still, if you want great sound, you need to connect your headphones.

Genius - This new feature is really surprisingly good. When you're listening to a song you enjoy, select the genius option. It will create a playlist for you, with songs that go together nicely with the one you started with. It helps you rediscover great music from your collection with a playlist suited to the mood you're in. I didn't think it would do a good job compiling this list, but it has been quite impressive.

Applications - It's great to have the ability to buy (or get some free) applications right on the iPod Touch. Furthermore, with the software update this new iPod Touch comes with, the Application installation process is so much smoother than it had been even on my iPhone. It now works how you want it to, seamlessly. I like having a weather application that includes doppler radar images, and that is free. I also have several games on it. There is a great variety of applications available from hundreds of third-parties right on the iPod itself, so you are certain to find something that interests you. I really like the new release of Spore, for the iPod Touch and iPhone. Apple is really pushing the games and quietly suggest they are challenging Nintendo and Sony. They are innovative and interesting games, but I think they have a ways to go, to challenge those game makers.

Nike + is now built in too, so if you have the shoes and the puck, the iPod Touch is ready to receive the data from it. Battery life is improved to 36 hours audio and 6 hours video according to Apple. I find the audio number fairly accurate if you don't light up the display much, but the video number is a slight bit harder to achieve.

Of course, the new ipod Touch does look and feel even better than the first generation, from my small experiences with the previous one. I also think it feels cooler than my iPhones, but obviously your interpretation may very. I like the metal back on the iPod Touch. It looks classy, though it is prone to scratches.

One of my favorite features continues to be, when in my home on Wi-Fi, to reach down for the Touch, use Safari web browser and look something up. It's great.

Overall, it was a solid update for the iPod Touch. I wish the speaker could be better on it, but I believe that is due to the physical restrictions of the small device. I could have knocked it to four stars for that, but I think most people realize a built in speaker isn't the way you want to listen to most audio on an iPod to begin with. I love the Ipod Touch. I couldn't live without it now. I thought it was a little pricey when I bought it but it does so much that I found out why it's so pricey and it's well worth the money. There were only a few things I don't like. The fact that it doesn't tell you much about what comes on it when you buy it and in my opinion it really should come with some kind of game on it even if it's a free one. And if you plan on buying a dock for it and using it to connect to your TV, you can only use the Apple A/V cables because of the chip in the cable. You can hear sound with any cables but you have to have Apple's to get the video to work. In my opinion, I would think they make enough money off of you when you buy it and you really should be able to buy cheaper things for it. The games and applications are pretty reasonably priced. There are some really good free games and apps and others that start at .99 cents and go up to 9.99 or more. So if you are looking for a an awesome MP3 player to listen to music on and that you can play games on and make grocery list and keep track of just about anything you can think of, and do it just by touching the screen, then you will love this product. It may be billed primarily as an MP3 player, but it functions just as well as a PDA, especially after adding a few select apps (many of them free) like a scientific calculator, an eReader, and a few games for fun. The touch screen works almost flawlessly, and has a feel so smooth as to be nearly sensual. The screen resolution is fine enough to watch videos and pictures with real pleasure, no excuses for size needed. Typing takes a little practice, but it's fine for short notes and at least as good as poking at tiny keys with a stylus, and no oh-so-losable stylus needed. I've had this for three months now. I simply can't put it down.

I'm actually a big Apple hater. I'm proud that my last Apple product that I personally owned was an Apple II plus. Thats right. I skipped over 28 years of Apple products.

Why I love the Ipod Touch 2G:
1. Quite simply the wifi is near perfect. It seamlessly connects to my work, home, second work location, brother's house, mom's house. Unbelieveable.
2. The touch screen is frankly near perfect. By far the best touch screen EVER made. And I've tried a bunch from Nokia etc.
3. Web browsing is actually usable.
4. App store is groundbreaking.
5. Itunes is still the best, but needs real competition to push it further.
6. Battery life is very impressive for such a small device.

Cons:
1. No FLAC support.
2. Shinny. Seriously Apple.
3. Immediatly required a decent case and screen protector.
4. Changed charging spec. This is the bane of my existence.

The cons in no way outweigh the pros. It is a near perfect device.

Other thoughts:

You really don't need this large 32GB version if you don't have a large music library. The apps are so small that the 8GB one should suffice. I have about 144 apps on it and they only take up half a GB.

As a device, this is a pretty fantastic (but expensive) time waster. There are thousands of apps available, and some are even useful!

However, as a phone, this is easily the worst cell phone that I have EVER owned. Calls are dropped constantly. It usually takes 1 or 2 tries to even make a call. Ergonomically, the phone doesn't fit at all to your face.

While it is designed to fit well in your pocket, there wasn't any thought put into making it robust for said location. The headphone and charging jacks quickly become unusable with lint. There are also issues with lint fouling the 'Home' button. Unlike the jacks, there is no way to fix this issue (other than buying another overpriced phone).

Also, none of your old iPod and iPhone chargers will work with this as well. Apple really loves to stick it to their customers with a lack of backwards compatability (and I'm a Mac guy....) Ok, so just like almost everybody else I Loooove my Ipod Touch. I have only had it for 1 month, and I have to say that it's great in so many ways. The one thing that keeps on annoying me is the fact that everytime I plug it on my computer, the time and date changes so I have to reset them all the time; which in return messes up all my settings. I purchased an iPhone, and of course, went with the more expensive 16gig one. After the first week, phone would not sync with PC properly, returned to AT&T, soft reboot, no help, returned to AT&T again, hard reboot, no help, then received message on iPhone, something about airplane mode. Returned to AT&T again, sent to Apple store, port was corroded, all within 3-4 weeks, water damage. The only possible cause of this water damage was that the iPhone was in our bedroom, on the other side of the room from a humidifier. Called Apple customer service. This is my first ipod. All over, it is a well done product. A lot of cool apps to keep you from boredom. But this ipod as a media player...it's just average or even below average in some cases.

My other MP3 player are the Sony Ericsson i750 & Sonly Clie TJ37, they blow this ipod away when it comes to the sound quality. It's hard to believe there's no EQ for ipod Touch, sound quality is flat as the result of all genres play on one flat EQ setting. iTunes 8 is extremely slow on Windows XP doesn't help much neither.

Video is cool, instant access to youtube. Once again, lack of video controls. It only has brightness control, no contrast (I might be wrong on this)

Pro:
- Near perfection integration between iPod & iTune, very easy to use
- Display lyrics on screen (if lyric is loaded on iTune)
- Superb user interface
- Accelerometer really brings fun out of the games, kinda like Wii.
- Supports microphone, which enables to use VOIP such as Skype over wifi
- A tone of cool apps and a tone of junk apps

Cons:
- Too large and fragile to be an everyday portable MP3 player, unless you have a man bag. lol. One drop, it is gone. I've dropped my i750 many times and it still rocks.
- Average sound quality with no EQ support. What is Apple thinking?
- Turtle speed with iTune 8 on Windows XP
- Average earphone
- expensive accessory. $15.00-30.00 for a piece of thin silicon skin that is made in China?

If you want a solid and durable MP3 player, this is not the one for you. But if you want an average MP3 player with lots apps to keep you entertained, then this is a great gadget for you!

Update 3/08:
Good news, it does have an EQ. Bad news, it is buried in the Setting->Music->EQ.The difference between the EQ settings is barely noticeable, it's better than none.

It also a bug, its clock will go crazy when it connects with the PC where iTunes 8 is already running. You have to make sure iTunes 8 is not running on the PC before plug in the USB, otherwise you have to set the clock each time.

Apple, iTunes movie rental is a great idea. But $3.99 for 24 hours on a tiny screen? Hmmm...you should have a 0.99 rental for iphone/ipod touch category.

The only bad thing about this ipod touch it's very easy to scratch and also it's very easy to crack the glass or window. Wich I have done all ready and I only had it for a few weeks. But other then that the ipod is still intact and works find. No lag what so ever but one thing I wish it had is a better wi-fi connector. Maybe they could make an adapter for it or something. But besides those nothing really bad about it. Holds over 2000 songs or more depending on your quality of mp3s and or wma's. Holds over 100 movies wich you can easyly convert your dvds to m4p format. Then transfer them to your ipod. So all and all it's a great product minus the two flaws. But every new technology is bound to have them. This is the worst product I've purchased from Apple. I've recieved my ipod touch less than a week ago and it is of no use now.
After synchronizing it to itunes it stated there is a newer version of the firmware so i clicked the update button. Now the new version is not working on the system and everytime I click restore error 13 and error 14 is appearing in a window.

I've run all the diagnostic test and nothings hapening. I've sent a service request to apple, but just trying to send an email to them is another nighmare. You have to go through a million and one pages before you can do so.

Everything that needs to be added to the ipod touch must go through itunes, and what is worse you cannot just click one item from your playlist and add it to the ipod touch play list. You have to synchronize the entire system all the time. Such a waste of time.

I've recently purchased a psp for my son and the ease of adding music, videos, ebooks, adiobooks is so much easier. Even if you're not using psp manager you can do so using windows.

Not to mention there's a lot of ghosting on the screen of the ipod touch when I'm watching a movie. The psp is much sharper for viewing movies.
