The iPod Touch 2nd gen is great! And it is so much better than the first generation. I'm so glad I waited to buy this one!
Like everyone else, I was excited about the iPhone. But I am not an AT&T customer, and had no desire to switch. I also love my BlackBerry and am not too keen on a no-button phone. But the potentials of wifi and touchscreen with an accelerometer are amazing! When they came out with the iPod Touch, I was so excited! I've been buying iPods since 2003 and I've been dreaming of the day when my iPod is more like iTunes in my pocket.
That's why I was very disappointed when I went to the Apple store to check out the 1st generation iPod Touch. It was basically an iPod with a bigger screen. There was no interactivity. You couldn't delete, you couldn't make playlists, you couldn't edit your address book or calendar.
The second generation iPod is so much better. A big part of it was the software upgrade. The app store brings functionality that Apple never would have dreamed up on their own. But Apple also added a (tiny) external speaker which makes quick sharing even quicker and simpler, since you don't have to mess with earbuds. Another improvement over the previous model is an external volume switch, which is very handy because it allows you to adjust the volume without having to look at the device first, but adjust just by touch (what a concept!).
The UI still has some improvements that I would like to see made. The touch gestures take a little time to learn. I would like to see more capability with making playlists. I also don't like how the additional information that is displayed on tracks switched from the Comments field to the Lyrics field - and Apple doesn't let you customize things like that - which is very annoying.
When I first bought this iPod, I thought I would just use it to download apps and as a "fun" gadget. After all, it's only 8GB and I LOVE my 80GB iPod video, which I used every day until I bought the Touch. But now that I've had the Touch, I barely look at my old iPod! I use the Touch every day and it's really a joy to be able to see most of my tags.
